.....I dont usually mention my work on my blog...other than to whinge about having to go back...or rejoicing about days off....but this IS a big deal ... and I hope the outcome is fair.
I also wont bore you anymore about it...I know every occupation has its worth...and its battles to fight and this one is no different.... but when you see some of the jobs that are listed as professional and then equate them to ours....it really furrows your brow.
...and I agree wholeheartedly with Nic (from my last post) ... what about the childcare workers who have our most precious jewels in their hands...shaping their future.... isnt that important...well it certainly is to me...
Thanks for allowing me my whinge..... and for the very kind comments of support.... and Im now officially hopping down from my box.

Hi Mardi, i LOVE your blog!! And i just wanted to say THANK YOU so much for visiting my blog too! It's nice to see someone famous coming over to visit, lol:o).
ReplyDeleteMardi, I'm right behind you - of course Paramedics are professionals. I think it's important that you voice your opinion on your blog and make people aware of the situation. I for one had no idea that you guys were paid so poorly. Good luck with the outcome, it SHOULD go your way.
ReplyDeleteMardi, I didn't realise paramedics were paid less than nurses! I know it's a *lot* harder to get into than nursing, and having bee at the hands of the ambos, I'm grateful they know what they do.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the last year of my registered nursing degree (here in SA), and I have such an admiration for what the ambos do and see, from my limited practical experience. You guys have more autonomy and somewhat more responsibility than we do (or I will, anyway!), so it is surprising for me to find out you get paid less! I totally agree, there should be a pay increase, at least equivalent to that of nurses. I don't know if I could do your job!
Oh Mardi...no need for apologies :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is a big deal and I can understand how you must be so frustrated and bothered!
Let's hope you all get somewhere in the next fortnight.
Megan xx
OMG Mardi, you have definitely opened my eyes! My thoughts of Paramedics are that they are "first on scene doctors" and I had no idea that you weren't paid accordingly.
ReplyDeleteI really hope your fight for recognition is successful.
Oh and I can't wait to see your cover IRL, I have been dropping into work everyday this week but still not there. Maybe tomorrow :-)

Mardi, I am totally supportive of your position. I work in emergency services myself (different state, different job) and nobody "out there" amongst the public can truly understand the pressures of the job - not being paid a professional remuneration and not receiving recognition as a professional is truly insulting. Good luck with the outcome.
ReplyDeleteyou definitely own the right to whinge. i hope there will be some changes made in the near future!
ReplyDeletecongrats on SC cover, girlie:) waiting for my copy to come:)
stay on your coap boxx mardi... sounds like you have some great points there as to why you should be called professionals.....
ReplyDeletekeep it up matey...
and congrats too for making it onto the cover of the mag...

Goodness me, we should be paying the people who SAVE LIVES more than what nurses make. And I think about the emotional stress Paramedics/ambos go through as well, it certainly would be a tough job. without you there, the chances of some people making it to hospital alive seriously go down hill. I would think all emergency services would receive a decent rate of pay for the work they do. Keep on your soap box girl!
ReplyDeleteSadly (IYKWIM) we have had to deal with paramedics a number of times - including only last week - I TOTALLY agree that they are professionals!!! And ditto re childcare workers!!! These jobs are taken for granted. And the people working in them are (by and large) amazing and generous. I support you all the way. x
