Day trip to Burra...

16 August 2010

There is nothing worse than having a weekend off.....and not having any plans....
I guess because I  work the majority of them or at least part of them ....they become special....and the thought of just 'wasting' one is not an option.

So..... we woke on Sunday and headed off on a little day trip.
We decided on Burra in the mid-north.... its tucked away in the hills.... a real heritage area.....full of antique stores and little coffee shops. Burra was put on the map because of its copper mining history......and there are many little historical sites to explore. Sadly the weather was drizzly....and so we gave the walks and historical sites a miss....deciding to make another trip one day in better weather ....solely for the purpose of seeing them properly. The weather was perfect for morning and afternoon tea..... driving......and browsing the many antique stores though....so we were more than happy.
Once we had soaked in all that Burra had to offer....we headed on home via Clare ...another gorgeous little spot.

Of course I took my camera along..... and snapped a few pics from our day.....

Like the old open cut copper mine..... there were crumbling stone buildings dotted all over this mine site.....and this is one of the places we are looking forward to exploring more on another occasion.
The old railway station.... quite obviously no longer in use...

But such a beautiful old building....

We had a delicious coffee and cake in 'Pollys tea room' .... we had a choice of old fashioned beetroot cake, rhubarb tea cake....or upside down pear cake... we chose the pear cake and it was scrumptious.

Of course....typical of days out.....it flew by.....and it wasn't long before we had to begin the journey home again......

I thought that old painted billboard was lovely...  (snapped on the way home)
So that was it..... our day trip to Burra and surrounds....
I'm looking forward to travelling back there ..... in better weather of course..... to do some walks....and exploring...
I hope what ever you did....you had a fabulous weekend too....
